We hunted
many kinds of animals in and around Húy̓at. Joan Hall recalls “there were some wild goats up the mountain that the older boys would try to get but never succeeded in shooting them.” Deer, seal, waterfowl, and gulls were more easily accessible. Ducks and geese were abundant on the rich intertidal flats, especially in the winter. Randy Carpenter recalls that there used to be a large herring run in Hunter Channel and that ducks were attracted to the herring spawn. Gulls were hunted for their meat and their eggs were also prized.
In relatively recent times, and maybe into the more distant past, the fish traps in Húy̓at were used in a novel way to hunt geese.
